Change Your Past or See Your Future?

What would you do or where would you go if you could traverse a wormhole through space or time just once? One safe round trip passage.

Would you change your past or see your future?

Tough question. I could avert making some colossal mistakes, warn a younger me to avoid dating that one guy who turned out to be psycho, or do a number of other things, but all of the mishaps and tears have made me who I am today. I don’t think I should mess with that.

I’d love to jump through a wormhole and glimpse my future. Sneak a peek at my family. See if there are any issues I can prevent or simply enjoy the happy sight of us. Hopefully there’ll be one more added to our brood. Maybe even snag a copy of my best-selling novel so that it’s easier to write.

As tempting as that scenario is, I think I’d prefer to see my grandmother again before the strokes and cancer slowly took her away. I’d hug her—really hug her—tell her how much I appreciate everything she’s done for me and that no matter how far apart we might be she’s always in my heart. I’d share the publication of my first book, hold her hand as I show her pictures of my son, and thank her for all the love and guidance she’s given me over the years.

I like to think she’s an angel now, watching over me. So there’s no need for a wormhole, but it sure would be amazing to see and hug her one more time.

  4. Oh, so many directions we could go with a wormhole. Go forward and get a glimpse of my son and his children? That would be cool, but I can wait for that one I think. :)) And, yes, it would be wonderful to go back in time and tell the people we've lost just how important they are to us.

  7. Oh, yes, too many past mistakes to fix. I couldn't choose just one - hence my trip to the future. But I can relate to your post. I'd love to go back and tell my grandmother how much she meant to me.

  10. Oh, those are good ideas, too. I'd love to see grandkids! That would be excellent. But I'd also love some time again with my grandma.

  11. Hugging your grandma. Aw. Bet she's proud of you!

I guess I'd like to see my oldest brother and spend some more time with him. Long story, but we weren't raised together. I lost him not long after my son was born.

  12. It seems there is always a risk in going through a wormhole - all of the movies show the devastating effects, so I totally understand your final decision not to go.

  19. What a beautiful choice. My grandmothers both died in 1959, and I still miss them, so I know what you mean.

  20. Beautiful wish for a wormhole destination! I wouldn't want to change any of my past either- bad, good and ugly, it's made me who I am today!
    Lovely post :)

P.S. Going to the future to pick up a copy of your bestseller? Genius! :)

  22. Nice choice. I think a lot of us would like to go back & say some last words and give some last hugs to people we've lost.

  23. I'd go into the future, I couldn't handle the sadness of the past. I've lost too many in my family to one thing or another (accidents, illness, etc.)
But we each know what suits our heart best. A nice thought to see a beloved one.
